The winner is brought before the tournament host, who will grant the contestant a single wish. The general goal is to destroy all opponents apart from the other contestants, unique vehicles seemingly designed by the host themselves may stand in the competitors' path. In almost all of the games, the host is a man called "Calypso" in the series' fourth installment, perennial contestant Sweet Tooth briefly takes over. ![]() ![]() It’s almost like Yuna and her guardians exist in a different game, having chats with supporting characters that possess only the bare minimum of detail in their faces, and it only serves to take one out of the game’s world somewhat. It is incredibly jarring to see a main party member having a conversation with an NPC, as the difference in detail and animation is like night and day. That said, while the game looks great and main characters benefit from wonderfully overhauled 3D models, the HD upgrade highlights how many visual corners were cut elsewhere. The Sphere Grid is perhaps a little darker than it needs to be, but otherwise, everything looks gorgeous. FMVs look pretty damn stunning, while character portraits and menus benefit from the increased resolution. It takes a while for the game to drop its darker, washed out aesthetic, but as soon as Tidus reaches Besaid and we start enjoying a brightly colored world, the high definition sparkle really starts to pop. And indeed, Final Fantasy X does look better than it ever did, though the HD improvements carry with them some caveats.įirstly, the game truly does please one’s eyes on the PS Vita’s OLED screen. Such is the sorcery of the world we live in that, thirteen years later, your cruel lies have become glorious reality. If you’d have told me back in 2001 that I’d one day play Final Fantasy X on a handheld system, and it’d look better than the PlayStation 2 version, I’d have slapped you in the face and damned you as a liar. Even though there’s not much choice in where you travel on the grid, there’s still an immense personal gratification in feeling like one is controlling every little improvement on each character. It’s a lovely little system, one that favors gradual, subtle progression over sudden and stark boosts in skill. Each character starts in their own sector of the map, but as the game progresses, they will eventually be able to unlock routes to other areas, and eventually share nodes with other party members. Characters earn AP to move around this map, and unlock nodes using different Spheres found in battle, boosting their evasion, accuracy, strength, magic, and other vital stats. Bizarrely unused in future Final Fantasy games, or indeed any other RPG, the Sphere Grid eschews traditional character levels for a complex map of statistical upgrades and abilities. Of course, the Sphere Grid leveling system is what usually garners the most praise from fans, and there’s a good reason for that. Frankly, it makes far more sense than the usual convoluted need to have only three people of seven take part in all the action. The ability to swap out party members mid-scrap, and the resulting need to utilize every single character, is yet another good idea that future RPGs seemed strangely uninterested in. Just speaking of bosses, some of the series’ best encounters are found here, offering up some lengthy, emotionally draining slogs that nevertheless remain nailbiting affairs throughout. The ability to see the next few turns of combat – and alter that order of play using actions and spells – lends a tactical depth to proceedings, while the Overdrive special abilities, with their quick-time event leanings, add just a dash of extra interactivity to keep players on their toes.įrom contextual dialogue actions during boss fights, to full-on control of summoned aeons, Final Fantasy X brought a lot more to the table than it got credit for during its initial release. ![]() Just the ability to input and carry out commands while the animation of the previous command is still finishing provides a fantastic example of what I mean – sure, that’s a minor aesthetic change, but it makes the turn-based battle feel far more alive, adding a sense of speed and fluidity to an otherwise methodical system. In a post Final Fantasy XIII world, one can truly appreciate how good X was, and how it bridged the gap between traditional Japanese RPG and modern fast-paced expectations in ways today’s Square Enix could only dream of. FFX has aged phenomenally well, remaining an expertly structured roleplaying game with an engrossing leveling system and a subtle-yet-gratifying take on turn-based combat. Replaying Final Fantasy X on the PlayStation Vita, my belief that it was a delightful game in spite of itself holds true. Really, the lack of a manually traversable world map wasn’t that bad. Every time I look back on it, though, I only recall the amount of fun I had, not so much the disturbance I suffered at all the scary, non- Final Fantasy changes. Although I quite enjoyed Tidus’ depressingly upbeat adventure when I played it back in the day, I nonetheless viewed it as the beginning of a downward spiral for the Final Fantasy series, full of ideas that made for a notably inferior installment. My opinion on Final Fantasy X has only ever improved with time. ![]() The Summonmancer is nowhere near the best build or even class for Magic Find. Source: Blizzard Entertainment (Image credit: Source: Blizzard Entertainment) Best Necromancer and Summonmancer Mercenary setup Find something that works well for you, though Call to Arms (Amn + Ral + Mal + Ist + Ohm) is always a solid Summonmancer choice for a weapon Runeword. Ideally, you'll be away from the fray of combat whenever possible. Basically any endgame level weapon can be a good choice, since the Necromancer isn't the focus for this build, the numerous summons are. This is honestly just a good amulet almost regardless of what class and build you're going for, it's just that good.įinally, as for the weapon and Runeword, this is where you're allowed to cut loose. While not required, it grants +Skill, which your Summonmancer needs. In addition to +Skill, it also grants increases resistances and faster run/walk, making it a great balanced option. The former gives better Mana Regeneration, the latter increases Poison Skill damage. Grants increased Skeleton Mastery and Poison Resist. Even if you don't go for the rest of the set, this armor gives +Skills and faster run/walk. Extremely expensive, it'll give your Necromancer +1 Teleport as well as better stats all around. The former bestows Life Steal per hit, while the latter reduces damage taken. Andariel's Visage or Harlequin Crest Helm.If you just want a specific set to go for, Trang-Oul's Avatar is a five-piece set that will work well. ![]() The more powerful the horde of skeletons at your back, the bigger and better a wrecking ball you'll be. Mid- and end-game gear for your Necromancer A two-socket Wand, it'll vastly increase your Mana and Bone Armor, freeing up points to put elsewhere for your build. This three-socket Body Armor boosts your Resistances, decreases the damage you take, and increases your Necromancer +skills. Try repeatedly running the Countess in Act 1 to find many of these runes. Early on, your choices will be limited, but there are a couple of runes that can give you an edge. Runes and runewords are powerful items that can give a new character a big boost. The former gives you even more powerful monstrous summons and skeletons, which should be your main focus on this build. Here's the breakpoints for the Necromancer.įor the Summonmancer, you'll want to focus on any gear that increases +Skill or Vitality, the latter especially if you opt not to use Bone Armor. This differs based on class, as well as a few other variables. Despite both stats being increased by items in percentage points, Diablo 2: Resurrected features something called "Breakpoints."Įssentially, this means that the percentage increase has to hit a certain threshold (or Breakpoints) in order to actually change how many frames an action takes. Faster Cast Rate and Faster Hit Recoveryįaster Cast Rate and Faster Hit Recovery (or FCR and FHR) determine how quickly your Summonmancer can cast spells and recover from being stunned, respectively. It's simple but also extremely important, especially when playing on higher difficulties. It'll increase your health, making you survive longer. Vitality is your dump stat, easily the most important part of building your Summonmancer. This'll allow your Summonmancer to use heavier armor and weapons, necessary for surviving up-close encounters whenever your ball of writhing monsters, undead and golems aren't keeping enemies occupied. Since you'll only be putting a few points into Energy and you'll be avoiding Dexterity (unless you opt for enough to use max block in conjunction with Homonculus), you can put a lot of points into Strength. On top of that, since the Necromancer gains two points of Mana per level put into Energy, you only really need a few level-ups in Energy to get everything you'll need to maintain an army of undead. With that said, if you're a newer player and you're worried about not having enough Mana potions, a few level-ups put into Energy to increase your Mana won't hurt. EnergyĮnergy isn't the most important stat for your Necromancer, especially the Summonmancer build. Those are Energy, Strength, Vitality, Faster Cast Rate, and Faster Hit Recovery. There's a few key things for you to focus on as a Necromancer, especially when going for the Summonmancer build.
